Delhi Metro, Over-Hyped! and is Govt spending too much, just for Glamour???
The 20km long Calcutta Metro Railway completes its 25 years next month, unwept, unhonoured and unsung. It has never had a derailment, no fatality or no structural collapses. It carries 4.2 lakh passengers a day that is three times of the Delhi Metro, which is more than thrice as long. It is faster too.
Almost the entire length of Calcutta Metro lies below sea level and the construction was done entirely by Indian Railway Engineers without a single Foreign Consultant or Foreign Contractor. There are no unsightly massive Viaducts casting ugly shadows over the Historical Boulevards. Visitors traveling by car are not even aware that there are trains running below them under Chowringhee, Chittaranjan Avenue or Shambazar. The tunnels and underground stations are air-conditioned and the trains carry the cool air
with them.

The moving trains are not burdened with air-conditioning equipment, which adds 20% to the weight and 50% to the cost. These Spartan coaches were not airlifted from Germany amidst pomposity and fanfare. They were all built by the ICF/Perambur and hauled to Calcutta over Rails. They cost, at present day prices, a fourth of what Delhi Metro coaches cost. The tickets cost about the same as Buses and not thrice as much.

wow…this comparison is like an Old “Sholey” movie fan not wanting to recognize the beauty of movie ” 3 Idiots ”

  • Mithun

In layman’s terms, am a fan of both the old “Sholay” movie and the new “3 Idiots” movie… but Delhi metro is definitely overhyped. Calcutta metro’s standards are far better.

I do not have any idea about Delhi metro but yes Calcutta metro is very sound in its performance and cost effective. Never heard any major issues with it.

It would be more sensible to compare ‘this day’ with the ‘non-metro days of Delhi’ instead of what we did in Kolkata and what we are doing in Delhi. Till date I have been satisfied with the outcomes of Delhi Metro. Also don’t forget that this service is intended to be much more than a Glamour Quote for common people like us.

then let me compare kolkatta metro and seoul metro,,,,,,Kolkatta stands no where near to it,,dost logon milgayi na delhi metro,,bahut hai

  • Karan

Well then if you think so, then you can stop using it…

It is a mammoth project, achieved within a very strict deadline, if you want to know its true impact, ask the people who use it daily. Their lives have taken a turn for the best, besides there is a huge difference between the population of Delhi and Kolkatta. Delhi has more than double the population of Kolkatta. The Calcutta metro just covers 20 kms, which is not even a mere 5% of the coverage area the Delhi metro aims to cover by the end of Phase IV.

Yes, there are a few glitches in the whole project, but then a few sacrifices have to be made for development. Delhi brings with its unique set of problems, which has been managed brilliantly by the Delhi Metro. The Discovery Channel ran a documentary on the whole construction of this transport system, and how it has effected the lives of the people using it and those who have benefitted tremendously since the first metro rolled on its tracks. And we cannot compare the cost incurred during the build phases of the 2 metros, as there have been quite some spikes in the prices of raw materials used in construction. The Delhi Metro is a much larger project, hence it is bound to have a larger budget.

If you compare this with other government projects, its probably one of the best there is. Get your facts right mate, before you start slamming something or someone.

    Its really great work.

    Buddies… Chill
Buddies, It’s not only about why Delhi Metro spending too much! It is just to bring to our notice that We have people capable of completing such large projects working in Indian Railways and without any major accidents. I neither use Delhi Metro, nor ever used Calcutta Metro for my daily transport. I just want to say even after spending so much, there are issues with it.
Indian Railways could have done this project and probably they would have spent less money for this. Having said that, I must say whether they could meet the deadline or not, that is a million dollar question.
    Enjoy Metro ride dost :)

Buddy, I think you are not aware that the entire management who was given the responsibility of building Delhi Metro was transferred from your ever efficient Indian Railways. Infact Metro Chief E Sreedharan is also from Indian Railways and executed the Konkan railways project earlier and only because he completed that in time successfully and within budget was the only aim to give him the command of Delhi Metro. So your logic of saying Indian Railways would have done it better doesn’t make any sense.

Indian Railways complete similar projects in less amount and time because they don’t have to worry about constructing on heavily congested roads and digging tunnel in areas where on top you have traffic as well as old architecture buildings, markets running. Just go and have a look at the underground section in old delhi and CP areas.

    dilli metro much ahead
if u r comparing the prices and technology.
On the price front look at the inflation compared to 25 years ago. u will find delhi metro cheaper….
Technology of Delhi Metro is far more superior than the Kolkata metro. Just look at the sheer enormity of the project and the strict deadlines which it is following. No wonder it should be consider as one of the marvel of dilli.

  • Vikas

its like comparing Merc Benz with maruti 800. …. Delhi Metro is world class.. on par with many euro metros..
    Vikas

  • Jasmeet

We cannot compare two structures built at a seperation of 25 years.
But yes, Delhi Metro is running on Profits and should not increase the fares. It has definitely been positive to a large nos. of population.
    Jasmeet

  • Gaurav

True indeed comparing a world class modern railway system at par with the best in developed nations with a nearly 3 decades old railway system is not justified.

  • tushar
