I’m considering catching a train out of Delhi on the same afternoon as my flight arrives at the Delhi domestic airport (how often do the flights get late???).
How long does it take to get to Nizamuddin train station? By bus? Auto-rickshaw? Approximate cost for each? I think there’s a prepaid taxi stand at the airport, but that’s probably too expensive. Is there a prepaid auto-rickshaw stand too? I’ve heard these exist in some places, but haven’t seen one firsthand yet.
Any info on times to other train stations in Delhi would also be helpful as my plans tend to change…
Thanks!!!!
Steve

Hi Steve,
here are the options:
Bus: not sure if there’s a direct one and would not suggest this means of transportation as it is too crowded and a bit dangerous as well.
Auto: should be around rupees 100 –
http://delhigovt.nic.in/autofares/Transport.asp
But you’d be lucky to get an auto guy who will both agree to go by the meter and not take you by a circuitous route. Fix a price before hand – say Rs.100. At any rate I doubt you will find an auto outside the arrivals gate – you will have to walk out to the main road to get one. The trip should take you about 45-60min; to New Delhi Railway station it should take about 45 min, to Old Delhi Railway station it should take 1 hour to 1 hour 15min; these are approximate times, depending on traffic and the time of day.
Taxi: Not sure about how much the pre-paid – both normal Delh Police/Government ones or the prepaid radio cabs – would be. However, the radio cabs – not the ones you get at the prepaid radio cab counter – charge Rs.15 a km. and you pay when you reach your destination. Ask the driver for the tab – he should have one of those machines installed in the vehicle; even if he says that it’s not working, ask for a paper receipt..

The approximate distance between IGI airport & Nizamuddin station is about 20 kms. This will cost you Rs. 200 at the most from the pre-paid taxi booth. there are No pre-paid autos at the airport.

The time required to travel between the airport and various railway stations in Delhi depends on the time of the day.
It takes less time to commute late nights & early mornings (dawn-ish); things get worse at peak hours. Also, Nizamuddin & New Delhi stations are easier to access than, say, old Delhi or Sarai Rohilla, since you’ve to pass through very congested areas to access them.
It will all depend on what time you arrive in Delhi. Leave a six-hour gap between your arrival and departure to be on the safe side. I say this in view of your (perceived) reluctance to catch a cab. A commute by public transport/auto will only take longer.
have a nice journey

Unfortunately there is no public bus from airport to any part of the city.To take a bus you need to go outside the terminal building. With your baggage, it might be difficult to catch a bus and that you may have to change the bus to reach Nizamuddin station.
On autos, it depends on what time of the day and night you will arrive. Some times you may not get an auto .there is no prepaid auto stand in the airport.
If you arrive during day or evening , may be you have a possibilty to get an auto..( forget public bus unless you are accmpanied by a local person).
To save your time and to reach well in time, sugggest you to take a prepaid taxi from airport.
Delhi government thinks that all persons arriving in the Capital are considered rich and so expect you to use prepaid taxi or own car and not use public transport.

There is a bus service to various parts of Delhi from the international airport. For sure you can catch a bus to the New and Old Delhi railway stations every hour (until at least 10pm). I don’t know about H. Nizamuddin, but I’m sure about the others (I take the bus regularly from the airport to the NDLS).
the bus leaves from just outside the terminal near where you catch the pre-paid taxis. Ask just as you leave the building (towards the pre-paid taxis area) and someone will direct you.
what will be the taxi fare for delhi airport(domestic) to nizamuddin darga(west).
