Impact of mumbai blasts on Indian tourism

Hi All,

With the series of blasts in mumbai, life sure has come to a standstill, most of the offices were closed and the mumbai lifeline came to a standstill…

I read an update: Massive terror plot in Mumbai; 80 dead, 250+ injured; Update: 900 injured; Update: “Chatter” points to Al Qaeda? Update: 10 separate attacks

I also read an article on rediff stating ‘Blasts to have no impact on economy, tourism’ http://www.rediff.com/money/2003/aug/28blast.htm

For how long are we gonna inhale the fumes of terrorism and then calmly say that there would be no impact on indian tourism. Are we waiting for a line to be crossed when there would actually be a big impact on the economy and tourism as a whole…then would we retaliate…

I am sick of it all…the ones who say that mumbai and maharashtra is their home are making a pain for the north indians living there…y can’t they first do something about the terrorists who have made the financial hub of my country as their war ground…

The terrorists would be laughing at us all…cause at the time that we spend in fighting amongst each other they are diligently planning to blow us all off “no matter what part of india or the world we are from”

We see the havoc and blame the police and the intelligence but the fact is that we ourselves are not aware of whats happenning around us…rise people rise…..

Dont just say there would be no impact on anything…and wait for a stage when we would not be there anymore to access the impact.

Just keep an extra eye of vigil to lookout for any suspicious activity by these bastards and pull them out from our country into their graves…

    Nice one vibhav…

I too think its the combined responsibility of the citizens of the country to lookout for any bomb before it blasts…

The govt also should spread awareness amongst the public and publicise the contacts that can be immediately reached in case we spot something of the kind..

As of today even if i see something suspicious I am not sure about the first point of contact and to be frank i would be a bit afraid to get into all the shit that the police can actually get you into…if you are an informer

One of the main reason for all this is our lethargic and non proactive police force. Look at our police force, most of them are not fit, have fat bodies and some of them cannot even run properly if needed.

You can clearly watch on TV that in such cases most of our police force people are standing like on lookers.

Govt should immediately work on the police force hiring process ( which should be very rigorous ), arrange for high class trainings and drills regularly and above all give them money ( increase their pay scale )so that they can be motivated for performing their duty well.

All of what you guys have said , makes me laugh !
Rise ? (how much ? and for what ?) what do you mean by that ? Internal Fighting ? what do you mean by that ?police is not effective ?? (have you helped by the way ? like by joining NCC or Home Guard or something ? , i haven’t..i am just reminding);|

Firstly i would like to say that obviously indian tourism will see black clouds , i woudnt go to a country if it was torn and smeared with terror , even if that country was heaven ! ;o

In last 10 years , Indians have faced so many terror attacks but all of us have stood side by side . Before that ,such an attack would mean riots (and that is REAL BAD ), but see now ….. India is changing and if you ask me IT HAS !:D

i would like to say one thing … please don’t blame anyone … DONT blame police for being lazy and all , DONT blame the military to act after 24 hrs ! .. DONT blame Government for not reacting to such threats repeatedly …. DONT blame people for not rising and fighting ……DONT blame two brothers for fighting and allowing someone else to take advantage ……..DONT blame underworld for such problems … DONT even blame the terrorists If at all you want to blame someone …. blame yourself …. i know you will be furious for a week or so then routine life .. but for those 1000s life will never be the SAME ….for them the sun wont look the same ,the flowers wont have same colours the air wont smell the same ,water everywhere will look red , fire will be a holograph to past and future will be damaged already (imagine it can be you 2 ! ) . .. Let us take hands of each other and this time lets
go ahead and show the meaning of INDIA to these people (a word about them : they are also humans ………. probably):[

This sunday lets close all our lights at 9:00 and light candles for few
minutes in memory of our fallen brothers and sisters . Let us show them ! (this will be something to start with , i dont think i can go to Mumbai and pluck out the weeds ! ) :O

    Cheers ! :)

    Hey mike,

Its highly impractical to say that everyone of us should join Army or NCC or homegaurds etc, and its not about blaming someone at all..

What you are saying is like everyone should try to learn medical practice if doctors are not good in a country. People who are responsible for a particular work should be really good at it.

Although I agree that we all can be much more aware and co-operative as citizens.

However a fact is a fact .. Our agencies are not efficient and our political class is not willing to take initiative ( Otherwise how can these people strike at will anywhere and everywhere and so regularly )

  • mike.......

why not ? Joining NCC dosent mean you have to go and shoot or do rigrous training , all you have to do is to help . Seriously why not ?
i dont think it is impractical at all. Thousands do anyway … and that is just one way to put it.. i meant by helping in any way.. maybe by donations to NGOs and all . Did any of you by the way give anything for bihar floods or tsunami or the gujrat earthquake ?

You just cant tell someone .. hey ! you are a doctor so be good at it ! That is impractical… all i meant was what WE do we should be good at it and forget about others ..

Fact is a fact .. correct … but instead of pointing the shortcomings …………………….well that is also important so forget it.

Guys we are deviating from the topic which is “The impact of Mumbai Blasts on Indian Tourism”…

As far as Adventure tourism is considered I don’t see much impact on it due to the following reasons:
    1. Adventure Tourists like adventures and this may add to the adventure :-)
    2. Adventure tourism is generally conducted at the not so crowded and often at isolated locations so this certainly not be in the radar of the terrorists.. :-)

but certainly if 2 billion+ indian eyes are on the vigil then the preparation for the blasts and attacks cannot go un noticed…

I have tried looking for suspect terrorists when I am in the metro cities, though it is a bit uneasy as 99.9% of the ppl who may look as terrorists may be actually lazy indian folks who just dnt care to shave or mend their looks…but if u couple it with their actions then u can actually be more precise…try it out at least its fun…

    Vicky

  • You have hit the nail right on its head Vibhav…

What bothered and at the same time pleased me was Dr Manmohan Singh’s warning to our esteemed(?) neighbour.

We had hard evidence of terrorists being nationals of this nation in question after each and every terrorist activity in the past.

No government ever retaliated in this manner. This time involvement of the western powers made our PM do so.

Good, tit was hightime. Someone had to do so. But what pains me is they did it under the influence of Western World..

Also, White House finally woke up to the situation in India only after its citizens were targeted.

every act of terrorism should be taken seriously no matter irrespective of the number and nationality of casualties.

The threat is real and no country is safe.

You are right in mentioning that we need to rise and do whatever it takes to suppress it. We cant go about taking it as ‘business as usual’ and should stop feeling proud of getting back to normal after every terrorist attack so quickly.

A LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA

    Dear Mr. Prime minister

I am a typical mouse from Mumbai. In the local train compartment which has a
capacity of 100 persons, I travel with 500 more mouse. A mouse can at least
squeak but we can’t even do that.

Today I heard your speech. In which you said ‘NO BODY WOULD BE SPARED’. I
would like to remind you that fifteen years have passed since the serial bomb
blast in Mumbai took place. Dawood Ibrahim was the main conspirator. Till today he
is not caught. All our bollywood actors, our builders, our Gutka kings meet
him but your Government can not catch him. Reason is simple; all your
ministers are hand in glove with him. If any attempt is made to catch him
everybody will be exposed. Your statement ‘NOBODY WOULD BE SPARED’ is
nothing but a cruel joke on this unfortunate people of India.

Enough is enough. As such after seeing terrorist attacks carried out by
about a dozen young boys I realize that if same thing continues, days are
not away when terrorists will attack by air, destroy our nuclear reactors and
there will be one more Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

We the people are left with only one mantra. Womb to Bomb to Tomb. You
promised Mumbaikars-a Shanghai and what you have given us is a Jalianwala Bagh.

Only today, your home minister resigned. What took you so long to kick out
this joker? Only reason was that he was loyal to the Gandhi family. Loyalty to
Gandhi family is more important than blood of innocent people, isn’t it?

I am born and brought up in Mumbai for the last fifty eight years. Believe me
corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar. Look at all the
politicians- Sharad Pawar, Chagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal Thackray ,
Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackray, Vilasrao Deshmukh all are rolling in money.
Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the worst Chief ministers I have ever seen. His only
business is to increase the FSI every other day, make money and send it to
Delhi so that Congress can fight next election. Now the clown has found a new way
and will increase FSI for fishermen so that they can build concrete houses right
in front of sea shore. Next time terrorists can comfortably live in those houses ,
enjoy the beauty of sea and then attack Mumbai at their will.

Recently I had to purchase a house in Mumbai. I met about two dozen builders.
Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like me knows this and
with all your intelligence agencies & CBI, you and your finance ministers are
not aware of it. Where does all the black money go? To the underworld isn’t
it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to vacate people by force. I
myself was a victim of it. If you have time, please do come to me, I will tell
    you everything.

If this has been a land of fools, idiots, then I would not have ever cared to
write you this letter. Just see the tragedy, on one side, we are reaching the
moon, people are so intelligent and on the other side you politicians have
converted nectar into deadly poison. I am everything Hindu, Muslim,
Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule caste,
Creamy Schedule caste, only what I am not is INDIAN. You politicians have
raped every part of mother India by your policies of divide and rule.

Take an example of our former president APJ Abdul Kalam. Such a intelligent person,
such a fine human being. You politicians didn’t even spare him. Your party
along with opposition joined the hands, because politicians feel they are
supreme and there is no place for a good person like him.

Dear Mr Prime minister-you are one of the most intelligent persons, most
learned person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR. First and foremost expose
all selfish politicians. Ask Swiss bank to give name of all Indian account
holders. Give reins of CBI to independent agency. Let them find wolf among
us. There will be political upheaval but that will be better than dance of
death which we are witnessing every day.Just give us ambience where we can
work honestly and without fear. Let there be rule of law. Everything else
    will be taken care of.

Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be lead by one person or you want to lead the nation of a 100 Crore people?

An Article on the fall of tourists visiting in India

NEW DELHI: The number of overseas visitors to India fell by 2.1% in November, the first decline in six years, as the tourism industry struggles to
cope with the fallout of an economic slowdown and the terrorist attack on the country’s financial capital.

The likely impact of the terror attacks on tourism has also materialised as some 40-60% of bookings by foreign travellers, particularly from Europe and the US, have been cancelled after the terror trauma.

The Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels, a Jewish centre and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station were attacked by terrorists on November 26, killing over 180 people, including 26 foreigners.

According to a government data, foreign tourist arrivals to India last month fell to 5.21 lakh from 5.32 lakh in the year-ago period. And foreign exchange earnings from overseas visitors dropped by 12.5% to $1 billion.

A tourism ministry official hoped the situation would improve soon. “We have launched various initiatives such as rural tourism, adventure and medical tourism. This would certainly help us minimise the impact,” the official said.

The government has also been urging countries, which had advised their citizens not to travel to India following the terror attacks, to review the advisories. The UK, which had advised against all travel, has now modified its advisory to “all but essential travel.” On December 2, the Netherlands withdrew its advisory against travel to India.

Citizens of the US, the UK, Canada, France and Germany comprise the majority of visitors to India.

India has set itself a target of more than doubling the number of overseas visitors to the country to 10 million by 2010, when it will host the Commonwealth Games. The country attracted some 4.9 million foreign travellers in 2007.

During January-November, 4.84 million foreign tourists visited India, a rise of 8% compared with the same period in 2007.

Foreign tourists spend more time and money in India than popular nearby destinations such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore. In 2007, overseas tourists spent nearly $11 billion in India while during the same period, Malaysia was visited by 20.2 million people, who spent $10.1 billion. Singapore saw 10.2 million visitors from overseas spending $9.16 billion last year.
