Hi,,I have been to Bodhgaya twice from varanasi but have travelled through the same route both times:
U can take the following route
Varanasi
Take NH 2 out of Varanasi for Sasaram (114 km) via Chandauli
Continue Straight over on NH 2 for Aurangabad (44 km) via Dehri
Continue on NH 2 for Sherghati (52 km)
Take Left (5 km ahead of Sherghati at Dobhi village) on NH 83 for Bodh Gaya (28 km)
Reach Bodhgaya
have a nice trip
